  1. Dinner at Aljunied!

    Friday 31 August 2012

Some time back, we had dinner at Aljunied - Ci Hang Western and Chinese Vegetarian Restaurant. Actually, it's more like a cafe than a restaurant. You can't make a reservation and it's always so crowded when we visit it! The carpark there is also usually really full, but we're always manage to get a lot within 10 min! :D
This is the first time we order the chicken nuggets 盐酥鸡, and the reason we ordered it was because we really miss the ones we had in Tai Chung. I'm a non vegetarian myself, and I definitely found the texture of the nuggets to be really similar to that of real chicken fillets. So don't worry, it's not those starchy kind and it's more delicious. It was a lil disappointing cos it's really different from the one we had in TW. It's still nice and crispy just not the kind we're looking for.

As for the curry fish with rice, I love curry quite a bit, and I often prefer fish curry to chicken curry at roti prata places. Although this dish is vegetarian, it's taste is very close to that of a real fish curry, which I absolutely love. That's why I ordered this dish. There's rice and crackers, and the only downside of this dish is that there are only two pieces of fish, which makes it hardly filling, and that's why we had nuggets too.
I've been eating chicken chop since I was in Secondary school? The best western vegetarian cafe in my opinion. I like how crispy the outer layer is, but the inside (according to Kerwyn), its very chicken-ish! Haha. The serving is really huge so it's really worth the $$!

Do visit it at 72 Lorong 25A Geylang Singapore 388256!

It's the weekend, and we'll be visiting Comex to look for the canon pink printer that we saw at Sim Lim Square. Hopefully they have it!

  2. My Smart Boy!

    Wednesday 29 August 2012

Sorry for the lack of updates!

Here's one that just took place yesterday!
This is the first time there's a tea reception held for those who qualify for the Dean's list! And since guests are invited, Kerwyn brought me along! (:
It was held at Theatre @ The Nest (I think) and there were other faculties present too (i.e. Sociology, Psychology...).
     My boy looking great~!!
Good job! Well done! Keep it up!
Kerwyn has always been doing well in his studies. Though he's not a dean lister for Aerospace Engineering, his GPA is still quite high for it! JYJY!!!
The tea reception was too crowded that we went back to hall for my fav CLAYPOT NOODLES! Even though my appetite was poor, I managed to eat half of it because its so yummy!!! :D
Rested in Kerwyn's room while he continues with our UK trip itinerary! Planning for UK free and easy is no joke but we're doing well because friends have been giving us some help on where to go especially Kerwyn's primary school friends! (:

    Hope to update soon!
P.S.: Kerwyn is going to buy me a necklace because I lost mine at work (long story and it isn't my fault)!

  3. WineBar plus Merry Men

    Sunday 19 August 2012

    We went WineBar to drink!!
It was a pity there was an event going on, so we weren't able to get Citibank chop. Fortunately, 1 for 1 was still on at wine bar. First a Mojito for us, then an Erdinger. There wasn't a crowd until about close to 1030, and that's when we had to leave because the people who reserved the table we were sitting at, arrived. Came back later in the night for more drinks because my girl had to have her fav Jagerbomb!

Save yourself the hassle with a huge range of alcoholic drinks at affordable prices delivered right to YOUR doorstep for Free by ordering here!!
Since I was craving for some food, we decided to pop by Merry Men for our favourite favourite Truffle Fries! ($10 for a mess tin's worth).  It's something that we both love so much, and sorry for the lack of pictures! Merry Men deserves its own separate detailed review which we will get down to some time in the future!

Saw my secondary school friends Clarence and Dehui, had a few go's at Five Ten and a few drinks. Dh said I had the edge, but it's probably just because I drank less. He was still talking about old time's sake, and that sick Bacardi tray shot we had at Clarence's house. Ah the good old times...
She still has 2.5 years in Aussie, and she's only staying for only a week in SG. Did a lil catching up by the river and glad that she's coping alright in Aussie! JYJY Jiemei! (:

  4. Om nom nom: Blueberry Cheesecake

    Thursday 16 August 2012

As my family and Kerwyn's family really loved the blueberry cheesecake that I baked, I decided to share the recipe!
    Mum's birthday cake
    Some tips for baking cheesecake:
    1. Make sure the cream cheese mixture is really well-beaten so that there's no clumps. It makes the cake softer.
    2. Bake in a water bath - Fill water in tart moulds and place ~4 of them in the oven. This is a tip that I read online and it helps to make the texture more fluffy. Apparently, it seems to prevent the top of the cake from cracking too. I'll experiment this method with other cakes and see if its helps.
The cake was really yummy! It's so delicious that Kerwyn said it's starbucks standard! Hee~
It's true! The blueberries we got were really sweet on their own. The jam also adds to the great taste combination. Eating the cheescake when chilled is the best. Since the slices are pretty thin, it's not as "jelat" as other cheesecakes. Furthermore, the cheese, being Philadelphia cheese cannot go wrong. The base of the cake is digestives, which makes gives another texture to it. I wonder how it'll taste with Oreos!

  5. Om nom nom: Curry Cheese Baked Rice

    Wednesday 15 August 2012

If you remember our previous post where we went to JCube for lunch before popping by BioRhythm at the Science Centre. There's this 茶餐厅, or HongKong style cafe called Kungfu Paradies, and one of the dishes was their Babe, or curry cheese baked rice.
We really missed it, and since it didn't seem all that hard, why not try it at home? The process is relatively simple. This dish requires an oven as well oven safe dishes. We decided to skip the process of preparing the curry ourselves, so we went to get those ready made Japanese curry packs available at any supermarket. Since this was going to be a vegetarian dish, we decided to add some Champignons for some 口感, or crunchy feel.

    The ingredients needed are...
    • Rice (Japanese or Normal, by preference)
    • Cheese (Grated, Mozarella or Parmesan, we aren't really picky when it comes to cheese)
    • Champignons
    • Vegetarian chicken cutlet
    • 1 large egg
We have two versions. I added Cheesedale Cheese to mine to make it more cheesy whilst Sheena's just had plain Mozarella. To be truthful, there wasn't much difference.
My friends commented that it so doesn't look vegetarian, BUT IT IS! Though we just had it over the weekend, we're already craving for it because it tasted so awesome. Think we just might be making this for lunch again really soon =)

  6. Buffet Lunch at Quality Hotel

    Tuesday 14 August 2012

    It's Mummy's 54th birthday!
I know Mummy doesn't look 54 years old, she wears my clothes and follows the fashion trend very well! Love my pretty omma~! :D

My family decided to have buffet lunch at Quality Hotel to celebrate Mummy's birthday. It isn't our first visit there and I miss the carrot cake!
It's not our first time at Quality Hotel. Sheena brought me here once because I have never eaten a vegetarian buffet! See what I've got on the left? It's vegetarian sashimi, and it tastes about 90% similar to the real thing, by my standards, that's pretty damn impressive. Be sure to make reservations about 2-3 days in advance as this place is usually packed on weekends.
荷叶包 - My dad ate them before I could try but he said it was nice just that there could be more sauce so that it isn't so dry.
Lots of variety available, from jap food (salmon, sushi, tempura...) to dim sum (carrot cake, bao, bean curd roll...)! As mentioned, the carrot cake is really awesome! Sheena and I ate at least 10 pieces between us. In fact, we are always disappointed if the carrot cake isn't available when we go there for buffet.
There's your usual fried beehoon which tastes really good by my mum's review. They have curry, tau kua and lots of other small dishes which really complements the staples. In the right picture, you can see chicken rice on the top, which deserves a mention as well because it's really nice. You'd have to get it from a counter though.
The Laksa is really yummy as well, shared ~3 bowls with Kerwyn! Haven't had such good laksa for really long. And... There's LOK LOK too! Love the fishballs!
Was really full that I didn't even eat ice cream that was available at the restaurant. ~$25 per pax for the buffet, so must eat GAO GAO!

Whilst this is not the most couply place, it does serve pretty good vegetarian buffet. So if you're foodies like us, and would like to try vegetarian for a change, do pop by Quality Hotel. You'd definitely be impressed if you're not a seasoned vegetarian eater.

  7. We had a great time at Tanjong Pagar Station, but we wanted more, that is to take pictures on the tracks themselves! There are two spots in Singapore which have the signature railway bridge, and we headed down to Sunset Way first, where the bridge spans a canal.
At Sunset Way we found this Western cafe - Rocky's Pizza! A neighbourhood pizza outlet located in Clementi, with some homely decor to boot. There wasn't anybody as it was till a weekday, so we had a quiet time together!
Alfredo - We hardly eat Alfredo as we prefer the egg taste in carbonara. The serving is pretty generous, at $9.50, it could fill a growling stomach of a guy! So Kerwyn had no problems finishing it.
We didn't have problems with the pasta, but the pizza is HUGE. At 12 inches, it could easily feed a couple. We didn't expect the serving of the pasta to be so large, hence we had trouble with the pizza. However, the pizza trumps the pasta. It's a thin crust pizza, which is a prerequisite for us as we don't really like Pizza Hut style crusts. But it isn't so thin that you feel like you're eating a biscuit. The toppings were really generous too. Just imagine the overall thickness of a slice is comparable to a Pizza Hut pizza, but most of it is topping instead. At 22.90, it isn't the cheapest pizza out there, but it's definitely value for money. If there was anything to make us return to Rocky's, it would be their pizza.
The abandoned railway at Sunset Way
I was really scared because the bridge was over the canal and it's really high. I kept whining on how scared I was and was really on the verge of giving up... but we saw how a bunch of children just crossed the bridge so normally that I didn't wanna turn back. Grabbing on tightly to Kerwyn's hands, we finally crossed the bridge after a good 10 min struggle! Poor boy got red marks on his wrists!

If you want to visit this place, there is an easier route instead of parking at Sunset Way then walking.
The route in red is the one we took. You can park around 108/109 area, and walk over. However, this route involve scaling a steep slope, and having to squeeze into a small hole. An alternative route (which we found when we crossed and exited), is parking at block 305 area opposite the bank. From here, you can just take a path onto the tracks, and the walk northeast towards the bridge. Here a nice door is open for you to walk onto the bridge.
     Bukit Timah Railway Station
We're finally here at our final stop! Saw so many people visiting this place on facebook but we've never been here before!! Happy couple camwhoring under the sun!

This is a much more accessible, and it should be, since it is preserved as a heritage site. You can just drive along Dunearn road and turn into Rifle Range road, and you'll be right next to the bridge. Easy peasy compared to the bridge at Sunset Way.

So if you guys are feeling up for an adventure and/or wish to explore some of Singapore's heritage sites do pop by these places! You never know when they will disappear..

  8. On a particular afternoon, we decided to embark on a little adventure. After seeing so many people post up pictures taken on the now defunct railway of Singapore, we were tempted to give it a try too!
I saw a Yahoo news article about Tanjong Pagar Railway station having The Gift of Time exhibition by Hermes, and a cafe that is initiated by a local lifestyle magazine which lasts till 12th August, so we thought, why not take this chance to explore?
Our first stop was the Tanjong Pagar station itself. I only took a train from here once, all the way to KL, and it was an interesting experience. However I must say it's really weird to be back at a place where you know was once functional, where people actually went to and fro about their businesses, now only left as a heritage site. Makes you feel really old.
Kerwyn commented that the place now is really different from before (and he doesn't really like it!)
The 'Gift of Time' exhibition features a circularwalk-through display in celebration of time and the history of Hermès. We didn't really plan to come to this exhibition, partly because we were both art nuts, knowing nothing about appreciation. But since there was no entrance fee, why not?
We are taken on a artistic journey through time to revisit milestones in Hermès history. Helpful explanations were given by the respective tour guides in different rooms.
A giant top rotates slowly at an angle, always keeping its balance, signifying the concept of balancing time.
We tried walking in an anticlockwise direction whilst keeping our hand on the yellow wall, having the optical illusion of the top spinning faster and having the velvet wall stimulating our senses!
The artist combines a wide range of talents in his work, synergising scenography, poetry, paintings, photography and films to create a vibrant and whimsical world. The left picture shows a pendulum, and the effect of time on leather. The bag on the left is from 1920 whilst the one on the right is from the 90s. Contemporary designs!
Old school~! Me holding my favourite snack! They were overpriced though...
The weather was too hot for us to camwhore!
Trying to be artistic after an artsy exhibition! :D

Stay tuned for our railway adventure!
